Cool Shit

Chris Brown V Calvin Harris

If you havent heard both Breezy’s Yeah 3X and Calvin’s I Am Not Alone. peep them both below first

So yeah, there’s a slight change in around the 3rd bar, but stylistically, the jacking here is not even subtle. Almost identical chords, same rhythm, same sawtooth based synth, and same drop (ie, no drums). Which, essentialy, is the trade mark of Calvin Harris’ I Am Not Alone.

Before peeps jump on the Anti-breezy bandwagon, again, there is the chance he’s never heard I Am Not Alone, or even heard of Calvin Harris. The States are generally pretty ignorant to outside music, even their own big dance artists get minimal local exposure, but are arguable superstars internationally. (read: Steve Aoki and Ian Carey). Which means there’s a chance that an aspiring producer copied I Am Not Alone and sent it to Chris, who completed the record and put it out, none the wiser. Many aspiring producers try to kick start their career by mimicking popular songs in attempt to land placements. This is generally a pretty short-sighted decision, but hey, it happens.

The final piece to this theory is that surely someone at the label recognized this and should have said something, but: A – It seem like Chris has been operating outside of Jive a lot lately, just throwing out mixtapes and tracks to the internets, and forcing the label to catch up, and B - a Hit’s a hit. As long as they’re not gonna get sued, I dont think anyone at the label would have an artistic objection to this.

On the other hand, maybe Chris new exactly what he was doing, and was counting on the naive narrow minds/ears of his core (American) fanbase. He probably should have just tried to clear it (Pitbull style), but I can’t imagine that working in his favour:

Mind you, dont be too mad. Katy Perry, Taio Cruz and Rihanna all have had big records that are somewhat influenced by Calvin, albiet a little more subtly.

No Doubt – Hella Good (Bootleg)

Hypothetically, it’d be dope if there was an extended DJ-friendly version of this, along with some fresh artwork.

Hypothetically.

Jessia Mauboy x Snoop X Bangladesh

I’m convinced that this is the international record her, but it’s certified Australian radio money.

A little less ballsy than most of Banladesh’s records, sadly, but still dope.

Jessica looking all grown up now.

Out now in iTunes and BMF.

InTheMix Top 50 2010 Results

Thanks to a stack of dedicated fans and a few motivational videos, Kronic placed #22 in the National Rankings, and #4 in the Qld Rankings. This is Kronic’s first year appearing in the charts and we’re damn proud of our debut.

The InTheMix Top 50 is Australia’s authoritative Club DJ ranking system, and is based entirely upon public voting. Traditionally, the ITM Top 50 are strictly dance DJ’s, rather than open-format DJ’s, so we feel especially proud of our placing!

Our running partner – Tom Piper – placed #17, up 32 spots from last year, so it’s win all round.

Thanks to all those who supported, promoted and put up with some creative and polite facebook spam.

And a side note to the nay sayers of ITM and online popularity contests in general: Popularity is essential to the success of artists of all types. Whilst it isn’t generally the creative inspiration, commercial success is a major driving force for almost every artist in the world, no matter how underground you would like to think they are. Trust me, your favourite obscure/indie/underground/hipster act would be all smiles receiving a platinum plaque. (Love Matt)

See you next year

Runnin on Air

The Sydney Duo’s new album debuts at that number spot this week.

I managed to hear this in it’s entirety the other week, and it’s fairly solid. The RZA collab is intense, and the Xzibit feature works better than expected. Don’t get it twisted, the boys are the stars here. And some qualty M-Phazes beats rarely go astray.
